About Our Family

El Paso, Texas, United States
We are James, Lisa, Patrick, Christian, Carson, and Ella Payne a military family serving our country via service in the U.S. Army. Jim and I have been married for 18 years and have 3 wonderful home grown sons -Patrick, Christian and Carson. We recently adopted our beautiful daughter Ella Grace Ana from Donets'k, Ukraine in September. Jim and I began our Army life together at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas and every assignment thus far has extended unique opportunities and challenges for our family to grow and learn; to become a stronger, committed, and a prepared Army family. Having recently lived abroad for six amazing years, we cannot express how thankful we are for the opportunity to have represented our great country and to discover the cultures and customs of other countries; to become close to the people and learn from them; to open our hearts and minds to the unfamiliar languages and way of life in other countries. Having now moved back to the United States, we are looking forward to discovering what new adventures await our family. Rest assured, wherever the Army sends us we will continue to serve you and our country proudly. Army life, we wouldn’t trade it!

Flight to Ukraine

Our tickets are purchased!

Purchasing tickets has just been crossed off the "to do list" which I might add has been gradually growing. We fly from El Paso to Frankfurt to Kiev...same route on the return. It works out perfect for us as we have friends just outside of Frankfurt to visit with.

Hold on Ella - Pa pa and Ma ma are coming in 46 more days!

Finally Friday...

Well, we made it through another week of hotel living; but if I have to eat one more piece of chicken be it grilled, fried, roasted or otherwise I am going to lay an egg!

Today was a full day but ends with us knowing we are signing for our keys on Monday and moving in July 2nd and 3rd. I think we are ready to tackle the initial 16 crates of stuff.

Other news:

Patrick has completed 1 week of the 3 week course necessary for his driving permit. Can you believe we are on the verge of having a child of driving age?

Color, Color, Color....

Today, we picked out colors for our house and the painters commence painting tomorrow. I would like to stop by the house to take some before pictures prior to the makeover, and then again after the furniture is moved to see the transformation.I love colors…lilac, yellows, greens, browns, terracotta….

On another note, Patrick had his first day of driving school. He has several questions he will need to locate the answers for prior to next Monday…driving homework 84 questions!

Tomorrow we will work on selecting a caterer for the reception following Jim’s AOC on Monday.

Our house....

Here's the floor plan...

Off the MB you will see a "living room" - this will be converted into a bedroom for Ella. The bedroom across from the MB is Patrick's and the remaining one will belong to Christian & Carson.

Now that I have physically seen the inside of the house, I have started to process where everything will go.

Thanks to the wonderful people at Balfour Beatty Communities we will have color! We are ready to start turning our house into our home!

We also have a basement and a large yard!

Christian's 10th Birthday

Today, Christian turned 10 years old!
Happy Birthday little man!

Inbound Delivery

This morning, T.W. from transportation inbound notified us that our household goods have arrived – 42 days! Delivery is set up for July 2nd and July 3rd at our new home.

Looks like we will be a bit busy over the July 4th weekend; but we are thrilled we will be moving into our house soon.

Panic!

Okay, today I realized we have 2 months until we travel to Ukraine and I am living in a hotel, eating every meal out, living out of a suitcase and repeating the same clothing articles...sounds like I am already in Ukraine!

Still searching for the "best deal" on airline tickets. Anyone have any ideas? Got any extra sky miles you want to donate?

So much to do in such a short time frame. I can't even begin to look at preparing for our trip until we are out of the hotel and into our house, until Jim has taken command, and until the boys have celebrated their birthdays...then I can focus on the next journey. Breathe....

Getting Settled

After several airplanes and a nice layover visiting family in Tennessee, we have finally made it to El Paso, Texas. We will spend the next couple of weeks in the lodge while we await availability of our house and the arrival of our household goods. We hope to enroll the boys into some activities at the Youth Center; some classes at Sylvan, check out potential schools, and more! They have all done so well with all the transit time and they loved spending time with their cousins. More Payne Family Adventures to come!

And The Date Is...

The Payne's dossier has been approved and the date of their interview is August 18, 2008.

We won't have time for the passports too cool off before it is time to travel again!

We will plan to fly to Ukraine a day or two prior this date to preclude any transportation issues, adjust to the time difference, and meet with our facilitator and translator. On the day of our appointment we will meet with the officials at the SDA to review files of children who meet our request. Please continue to pray for us as we prepare to bring Ella home.

We're Leaving On a Jet Plane...

It is time for the Payne family to embark on our next adventure in Texas.

In just a few short hours, we will be departing Spain for the United States of America. We have had an incredible 3 years living in Spain, formed friendships that will survive a life time, and traveled to some far-away places we once had only dreamed of.

We will truly miss seeing all of you and feel blessed to have had each of you touch our lives and bless us with your friendships – thank you.

We promise to keep you posted as our journey into command commences and as we travel to Ukraine in August to bring our daughter home.

Love,
The Payne’s

Letting go...

In the military we sometimes find ourselves serving in a foreign country; and abiding by a whole different set of moving guidelines. One of those guidelines often only permits for the family to ship 1 vehicle to their new location. Well, if you’re the traditional 2 car family, reducing your lot to 1 can be challenging. Therefore, shortly after arriving in country, the hunt is on for the second car or as we affectionately referred to them ~ the hooptie. Now, the hooptie is basic military slang for a get around car, a point car (A to B), a disposable car; something you purchase at a really low price in case it becomes dinged, scratched, or disabled it is of no great loss; financially anyway.

My hooptie was (past tense) this beautiful little BMW that I just loved. It was a reliable good hooptie - it never left me stranded. It was your basic manual vehicle, with no electric windows, locks, or seats. It had air, heat, radio, and CD – do you need more?

Well, now my little BMW has been purchased by a new hooptie owner and we are officially vehicle-less!

June 4, 2008

Vehicle-less

Well, we are one step closer and will be taking many steps (pedestrian ones) now that we shipped our car today. It should arrive sometime in August.

Blueberry Muffin Conversation...

One morning this week, I was making blueberry muffins for breakfast - Christian's favorite. He likes to sit in front of the stove and watch them rise (I think he sits there for the warmth of the oven). Anyway, as he is quietly sitting there and without any conversation leading up to this he turns to me and says, "Mom, I feel so safe with you and Daddy." My heart just felt so full that our child is so secure. So I turned to him and I said, "You should feel safe with Mommy and Daddy and it makes me happy to know you feel so safe." He just smiled at me as he still sat in front of the stove watching those blueberry muffins rise. After a brief few moments he said, "I hope you feel as safe with me when you are old and living with me, my wife, and Dmitri (his best-friend). What is a mother to say!

I just had to share that with everyone - it was a moment in life when you know everything you do impacts your child(ren); and to have a small child say something so meaningful (at 0715) and off the cuff assures me we've done something right!
This is our "spot" we began at the beginning of our journey in May 2007, to adopt a child from Ukraine. In August 2008, we traveled to Ukraine to bring our daughter/sister Ella Grace Ana home; and on September 12, 2008 we did just that.

While our journey to bring her home is complete, our journey together is just beginning. We will continue to keep our spot here, posting as frequently as we can; and keeping you updated on our next journey in life...maybe a second adoption is in our future.

Please join us by following us by clicking on the "Follow" link to the left and posting your notes at the bottom of any post we have made.
